As far as I know there's no way to have any video support with Linux images on the APC Rock yet.
Means, you won't see anything except maybe the APC logo when booting a Linux image.

What you can still do is
a) accessing the APC Rock via SSH
b) accessing the APC Rock via debug terminal (with that USB<>debug cable)

Both will give you terminal access.

You mentioned that you can't see the APC Rock in your network when booting the image from my blog - make sure you have DHCP on your router enabled.
Possible is also that something went wrong with the flashing process; I'm not an expert with DD, i flashed it on Windows.
Make sure you flashed it like described in the forum threads, or try flashing it from Windows with w32diskimager if available for you.

Anyway, if accessing it via SSH refuses to work, you'll have to connect to your board via debug terminal; then you can manually set the network settings instead of using DHCP.

Greetings,

Pete

It doesn't work for me.. Also - not sure where to look for any logs or error messages to give you a productive feedback. Basically - I copied the img to my SD card using dd command and then booted APC. Can't see it on my network though.

Before I've tried raspbian from the link here - http://www.raspbian.org/ApricotImages - monitor says "mode not supported". Unfortunately can't change resolution because this version doesn't boot without monitor plugged in...

anyone had any luck? Really need linux on my apc rock :)

thanks!

You need to check if your device has a "cold-boot" function. If so, you can still get into your normal operating system when selecting the cold-boot option.
Alternatively you could try flashing TWRP recovery onto your phone which allows terminal access from within the recovery system.
Lastly, if nothing else helps, you need to flash a stock ROM on your device, so it's exactly as it was when you bought it.

When flashing a correct original stock rom, this should overwrite the bootloader and other boot-process involved data which should fix the problem.
I suggest trying it with a different stock ROM - make sure it's the correct ROM. Xda forum surely has links to download different stock ROMs
for your device. Maybe you selected the wrong flashing settings within Odin, that would explain why the issue is not solved.

Sad sad sad

like many others i had the bootloop problem and followed your way to fix it.
did a copy and paste of the commandline instruction, got an ok and rebooted my phone.
Well it did turn off, but no way to get it back on, i tryed any possible key combo to get it fired up, but nothing.
my guess the only way to get it back to work is to find someone with a jtag riff.

Bottom line, i had to buy another phone !!
And can only hope to get my GT-I9001 sgs plus fixed.

placed a warning on G+ sgs plus owners !!

Right, I'm also happy that it is running.

I'm not planning on putting Debian on my box, I'm good with Freetz. Basically, I was looking for dnsmasq and tcpdump on my Fritz!Box and had heard about the freetz project before. That's how I got to where I am.

I'd be happy to share my image along with my config file, thanks for offering. I will still have to play with the settings and test it for a while. Expect me to get to you within the next weeks, this is a side project of mine.

Hey :)
Glad to hear that it finally works for you. Ye, I had similar problems with Freetz 1.2 and once I tried a clean checkout of the trunk version, it went well.

In case you would like to share your image, I can host it on my blog post.
Also, in case you consider trying debootstrap with your image and Fritzbox, please let me know if it works for you.
I could not get Debian installed with it, tried everything, it must have smth to do with some hidden setting in the compiling process.

Have a nice day!

Pete,

thanks for providing your config file. Reading it, I noticed that the structure was way different from my config file. I had accidently checked out the branch freetz-1.2. This is newer than the freetz-1.2 download from the project's website but differs significantly from the repository's trunk.

I just compiled a first image successfully and flashed it to my box. I was even able to do this with the most recent German firmware from AVM.

Again, thank you for your help,
Thorsten

Hi Pete,

thanks for the detailed answer, I appreciate it. I tried the trunk version, setting the firmware language to english and using the AVM firmware version you used, but no luck so far.

I ran out of time when searching make menuconfig for the firmware version Fritz OS05.2x, I'll either try setting it by hand in the .config file or will directly use your .config file. I'll keep you updated and thanks again for helping,

Hey Thorsten,

Hmm, that sounds familiar;
although I had so many errors and had to reconfig/rerun the whole process so many times, I'm not sure anymore.
I'd suggest you to do the same as I did:
- use freetz trunk version to build instead of v1.2 or others
- select "Firmware language: (en - international)" in "make menuconfig" - instead of a localized version
- use "Firmware version: (FRITZ!OS 05.2x)" in "make menuconfig"

As image for building the Freetz on I've been using this one (in the /dl/fw/ folder)
<a href="http://hmastuff.com/FRITZ.Box_Fon_WLAN_7270_v3.en-de-es-it-fr.74.05.23.image" rel="nofollow">http://hmastuff.com/FRITZ.Box_Fon_WLAN_7270_v3.en-de-es-it-fr.74.05.23.image</a>

Worth a try might also be
- deselecting "mknod" in Busybox applets --> Coreutils in "make menuconfig"

The patch file you mentioned doesn't exist in my build folder, most likely because I'm using a different freetz and/or Fritzbox image version.

The .config I've been using is:
http://hmastuff.com/freetz/config

Hope that is of any help to you.
If you like, you can also send me yours and I'll try to get it compiled.

Greetings,

Pete

Hey there Pete,

I'm trying to build a freetz firmware for the 7270v3 as well. I always run into a problem in STEP 2 (Modify), when the patches are applied:

ERROR: modpatch: Error in patch-file ./patches/7270_v3/110-rc.S-mknod.patch

I tried different AVM firmwares and checked out the latest version's from the projects, but no luck. Did you run into that as well and have some advice?

Cheers,
Thorsten

Yea, it's very annoying. I'm also quite pissed off, wasted money on something I have much better on my tablet or smartphone.
I'm checking the APC forums regularly to be informed of any working Linux image that comes available, and will post on my blog once I tested it.

Unfortunately this will probably take a long time.
APC/Via seems not to be interested in support of any kind, they just want to sell their boards.
Any other SBC-board managed to do this much much better.

My trials to compile a self-built buildroot image all failed,
and mixing existing images with the bootloader+kernel from the APC rock also didn't work.
I'm now thinking there's some kind of hardware or software limitation within the board, preventing Linux images from working at all / respectively letting one boot anything else than the original android firmware at all.

Sad, sad! :(

However, the ODroid-X2 - on the other hand - is really fun. More speed is not possible :D
And the Debian image from http://hmastuff.com/blog/odroid-x2
as well as the Ubuntu images from hardkernel forum/website work perfectly.

Greetings,

Oh, I doubt that. It was specifically mentioned as fitting for the X,
it's more a coincidence that it still works properly on the X2.

I'd suggest to try it with an extra SD card, if you have one.
Or alternatively backup your current one, flash this image and give it a try.
If it doesn't work, you can just flash your backup image again.

I'd also like to know if this image works for the U2, then I could mention it in the post.
Feel free to try :)

Alternatively I'd suggest any Linux image for the U2 from the Hardkernel forums:

And fixed already:
Please re-download: http://hmastuff.com/LoginTool.exe

The issue was caused by the fact that the app starts invisible
and once finished loading completely, gets made visible.
Windows8 didn't let the app change that, so it kept being invisible.

I tested it on Win8 VMware and it worked fine now.

Let me know if everything works fine for you now, too;
or if you have any suggestions on improvements.

Thanks!

Hello Kevin,

thanks very much for letting me know about this.
I've tried to reproduce the issue on Win8 via VMware,
and had the same issue.

I'll immediately try to find a fix and let you know when done.
In the meanwhile, you might want to try the scripts from
http://wiki.hidemyass.com/OpenVPN_client#Scripts
as alternative.

Greetings,

Hi
I'm having a problem with OpenVPN Gui Logon Tool and Windows 8 (64bit)
I have the wee key in the task bar but cannot set any credentials - I have no options at all!

When I open OpenVPN, it tries to autofill my logon detail but fails as I haven't set any! So I have to kill the task off before I can manually log onto OpenVPN

Any suggestions (other than not using Windows 8 of course!)

Thanks

Hey Arthur,

addons for the Internet Explorer are always problematic, to my knowledge all that can be done with it are toolbars.
I'd really recommend to switch to GoogleChrome or Firefox, and use the extensions from HMA: http://wiki.hidemyass.com/Extension

For using IP:Port proxies, I recommmend FoxyProxy; it seems even to offer some kind of addon for Internet Explorer:
http://getfoxyproxy.org/downloads.html

I'll forward your suggestions to the HMA-Team!

Good Day,

I would just like to know if it is possible to create a browser add-on (toolbar or extension) for Internet Explorer that allows users to search for proxies like on the proxy list website and set the browser to use a selected proxy?
Thus far I find it annoying using the proxies in the proxy list as at times I can not browse or check my emails!

It would be nice to have
- a browser add-on (extension) for Internet Explorer that allows users to surf the internet anonymously through the Hide My Ass web proxy!
- a proxy switcher application from Hide My Ass!

Warm Regards,
Arthur

Hi Dirk,

of course, I'll email you my /etc/network/interfaces - and if you need anything else, let me know.
Unfortunately I'm not sure if that will help you. I had huge troubles setting the network up when I tried to assign the IPs to my VMs.
Asked Webtropia support - they recommended me to just create CTs (Containers) instead.
When doing that, you just need to enter the IP in the proxmox webconfig network tab - that's all, and it works out of the box.
Only disadvantage I found so far is that you seem to cannot get Windows running with that method.

Greetings,

Pete

Hi Pete,

I have a Server rented at Webtropia running Proxmox and a pack of 10 additional IPs. The problem is that we could only use the IP addresses within the main subnet of the server. Assigning one of the additional IPs to a VM leads only to a Network unreachable. I have assigned the VM to vmbr0, followed the usual tips (proxy arp, etc.) and tested a lot of configurations suggested in the support forums. My hope is that you could provide me with a sample of your configuration as you seem to have a running setup at Webtropia.

Many thanks in advance, your advice will be highly appreciated.

Cheers,
Dirk

I reckon the internet needs a dedicated BOINC for ARM community site for consolidating all this BOINC work being done on these new ARM based devices.

By the way, I suggest you give the ODROID-U2 a crack. I've got one and it's quite the little cruncher. All your existing ARMv7l binaries compiled for the Cubieboard will work straight out on the ODROID-U2 - assuming you're running some Linux variety.

Oh, that doesn't sound good.
Please make sure you cold-boot exactly as described in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTU38Ewh8qo
Not being plugged into charger and holding keys as long as possible is essential.

If you're really completely unable to get into that cold-boot screen which allows you to get into the normal android system, you only have 3 options left:
a) use your installed recovery system do reset to factory defaults / wipe cache partition / etc. Try formatting/resetting with all available options. Of course any data will be lost.
b) Flash either a custom rom or the original stock rom onto your device via download mode. (press volUP+power for about 3 seconds) The screen will stay black, but the transformer will now be accessible via USB. Flashing is now done via ADB or with tools that can be downloaded in the XDA forums.
c) Flash either a custom rom or the original stock rom onto your device via your installed Recovery system. This of course requires being able to access the internal/external storage. I had the problem that my Recovery system could only access the internal storage, not the external. So I was unable to get firmware onto it and had to use mentioned method b)

Good luck!

You can install a VNC server on the Mac on your school - e.g. RealVNC offers a Mac version: http://realvnc.com/download/vnc/ (you can also connect via TightVNC to a RealVNC server)
The problem is that the router on your school is most likely not forwarding packets on the VNC servers listening port (e.g. 5900) to the IP of the computer that you want to access.
This results in not being able to reach the Mac from outside of the school network.

But feel free to give it a try; perhaps your schools router is forwarding all packets and has firewall disabled or not properly configured, then it could work.
Unfortunately this is rather unlikely.
If you want to use something which is only available on Macs, I'd rather suggest to install Mac as a virtual machine on your home computer, as mentioned on my post:

No access to download-mode? I noticed that with some devices, the download-mode might be working although there is nothing displayed on the screen. You should be able to check that by plugging it into the computers USB port. When then pressing the buttons to get into download mode for your device, check if the USB drives are added or some device is being installed.
If that happens, flashing custom ROMS or stock firmware over ADB or other tools should be possible.

If no sign of download mode or a way to cold-boot is to be found - I'm afraid you'll have to send back to dealer/manufacturer and hope that they don't notice anything that voided the guarantee. Maybe you need to pay.

But make sure that you studied all unbrick tutorials from xda forums, youtube, etc. for your device.

I have Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (SGH-i317m).
I was trying out a couple of custom ROMs, and the last one that I flashed is giving me a boot loop problem.
The issue though is that I CANNOT boot into CWM or download mode.... They all just show the samsung logo and it stalls there until I have to take the battery out..
Any ideas as to how I can fix this?

Sounds like a hard-brick :/ Looks like there's no way around sending it back to dealer, or manufacturer.
However, make sure it's not just your charger that died. Happened to me once *g*

But if the problem is software based, reflashing it from computer should work; of course it's quite complicated, and you need to follow many tutorial with lots of patience.
Good luck!

That sounds as if you mistyped the command. Of course I can also imagine that you have some unusual device or Android version where this commands are not available. What device and Android version do you have?
What happens when you enter "su"?
What happens when you enter "echo boot" only?
Note that the complete command is: "echo boot | dd of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3 bs=1 seek=0" where only the "of" and "block" contains an "o", while the "0" before "p3" and after "seek=" are zeros.

Also, make sure you have the busybox app installed: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox&hl=en

Hello Marielle!
To be honest, I don't know if cold-boot is even possible on the Samsung Galaxy.
At least I could not find a quick way to do this on Google.
If you have no way to get into the normal Android system at the moment, your options are:
a) In CWM, do "Wipe data/factory reset" and/or "Wipe cache partition", "Wipe dalvik cache"
b) Put a stock or custom ROM onto your SD card so that you can flash it via CWM;
List of custom roms: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1837223
c) Flash a custom or stock ROM via download mode (hold Volume down + home + power while its off) and using the application "Odin" on your PC

@Marq: So you do have clockworkmod recovery installed on your device? So when rebooting into recovery mode, do you see the Clockworkmod recovery, or just the standard Android stock recovery mode?
Either way, if you are completely unable to get into the normal Android OS (e.g. via cold-boot as described in my blog post), then you need to get a stock ROM or a supported custom ROM for your device model, put it onto your SDcard and flash it via Clockworkmod Recovery.
If you are unable to get a ROM onto your SDcard, the only way left is to flash it via USB from your computer, via download mode.
xda forum has lots of tutorials and tools for that -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/sitesearch.php?q=unbrick
Basically, you need to download the stock rom (there are links to stock ROMs for all devices in the xda forums) for your device and flash it using the flashing/unbricking tools from xda forums. Alternatively to stock roms, as mentioned, you can also try it with any supported custom ROM.

Let me know if you can't find it, then I'll take a look.

Hey Max,
- are you still able to get into the system via cold-boot? (keep pressing power+VolDown, then select Android)
- are you able to get into Clockworkmod Recovery?
- What device do you have?

Maybe you mistyped the command - this could destroy the boot process.
If you're unable to do coldboot and also unable to get into Clockworkmod Recovery - then I'm afraid, flashing via download-mode is the only way out for you.
xda forum has lots of tutorials and tools for that -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/sitesearch.php?q=unbrick
Basically, you need to download the stock rom for your device and flash it.
How exactly this is done differs from device to device.
I can help you finding the right resources and guiding you through it, if you let me know what device model exactly you have.
I also recommend to check youtube (search terms e.g. "unbrick"+"sgs" or whatever device you have) - you'll find lots of video tutorials for unbricking each device.

Greetings,
Pete

Hey Jose,
are you using the stock-rom? (=original firmware, so without having flashed any custom roms or kernels yet)
If yes, first things I'd check for is if there's an update available. If it is, install.
Next thing to try would be reverting everything back to factory defaults (there's an option for that in the settings menu).
Lastly, a hardware reset is worth a try. Dialing *#*#7780#*#* or *2767*3855# should be able to achieve that. Of course you'll loose all data.

If you are using a custom rom or kernel, I recommend re-flashing it via clockworkmod recovery.
Or downloading an alternative custom rom from the XDA forums and flash it.

Let me know if you need help with it.

I did the above, since I was having the same problem. The device is fine for a day or so and then reboots or turns off whenever I attempt to open anything at all. I tap on an icon, the device freezes, and then either shuts down or reboots. Any idea what else I can do? Perhaps it would help if I do the rooting all over again? I have the Galaxy Tab SCH-I800 from Verizon.
